This simple little company has a simple little protein bar. They pride themselves on keeping things small and easy. In fact, all Rise protein bars are made in one California kitchen in small batches. There is no mass production going on here!
Their young Founder and CEO, Peter Spenuzza suffers from gluten intolerability and had a hard time finding protein bars that were gluten-free. He seems like a pretty happy guy, I would be too if I owned a successful business at his age. His motto is to make sure to laugh and play every day. He is also into the new idea of bringing back real food into our daily diets and he makes that clear with the products he creates.
The company is founded by and based on health, fitness, and adventure and their website offers a blog to keep sharing new tips and ideas with their customers to get them active and eating healthy.
Rise offers more than just protein bars. They have energy and breakfast bars too! Let’s break down these bars (although it won’t take long) and see how they measure up to the competition.
You can really tell that these bars were created for people with very sensitive digestive systems and/or very health conscious people. The ingredients chosen for these bars are very simple and very selectively chosen to be included. As the company website states: “We make every ingredient count.” There are no throw-ins for added flavor or preservation. With every bar having five ingredients or less, these bars are the real thing.
Their choice of protein is whey protein isolate. This is a complete protein that is popular because it is easily absorbed and used by the body. Whey protein comes from cow’s milk. Whey is separated from the rest of the milk during the process of making cheese. This whey is then turned into a powder that can be used in smoothies and protein bar recipes such as these.
Whey protein is a good choice of protein because it has many added benefits. For one thing, it has been proven to reduce blood pressure by 4% in 12 weeks. Check out this study for further proof.
Rise also makes vegan protein bars like the lemon cashew, chocolatey coconut, and sunflower cinnamon contain pea protein isolate, which is also a good, clean source of protein.
Almonds are one of the main ingredients in their original bar and in three other bar flavors. Almonds are a great choice in a protein bar because they are high in nutrients but relatively low in calories.
They have a high antioxidant content, among which is Vitamin C. Almonds have so much vitamin C that just an ounce of almonds delivers 37% of the daily recommended dosage. These delicious nuts are also high in fiber and protein with healthy fats. This makes for a great weight loss aid because it helps keep you full and satisfied for a longer period of time.
Almonds are also a great source of magnesium. Magnesium is proven to help reduce blood pressure in this study.
In all of their non-vegan bars, Rise uses honey as a sweetener and a binder. Honey also comes with its own list of benefits. Even though honey is a sugar that contains no protein or fiber it does contain antioxidants because it is made from the nectar of plants. Honey has a mixture of flavonoids and organic plant compounds that give it its super antioxidant power. Read all about that here.
Honey has other healing powers, like the power to heal wounds or burns. This method has been used since the days of Ancient Egypt. It has been proven to help heal infected wounds or burns, diabetic foot ulcers, and other skin conditions.
Cacao is the purest form of chocolate. This is one of the main ingredients used for flavor in many of the Rise protein bar flavors. Cacao has a great flavor but it is also beneficial for your health because of its extremely high antioxidants levels and magnesium levels. It also contains fiber, healthy fats, protein, zinc, iron, and calcium.
One of the best parts of the ingredients is what they lack. There are no preservatives or added sugars. This makes them a very clean protein bar which is a very rare find.
These bars all come with 15 grams of protein or more, with the two most popular flavors having 20 grams of protein. Most Rise protein bars are less than 300 calories each. That is a good amount of protein in so little calories.
The carbohydrate content and protein content are pretty equal but about half of the calories from the bars come from fat. This fat is healthy fat, remember. There are no trans fats here.
This makes a 25-25-50 ratio of protein, carb, and fat content. This is high in regards to fat content. These bars would make you want to limit your fat intake for the rest of the day.
The bars contain on average 4 grams of fiber which is good. It will help fill you up. They also are a good source of potassium and calcium except for the Lemon Cashew flavor which is high in iron.
There are plenty of sugar in these bars from the honey or coconut nectar, but these are natural sweeteners which are a whole lot better than the added sugars in some bars. There is also very little sodium so if you are worried about salt content put your worries to rest.
Rise protein bars would help you gain muscle mass and give you a big boost in energy. These bars would be a good choice for a mid-workout snack if you are training for a marathon or some other intense program. It would also be a great pre-workout snack if you are looking for a natural energy boost. This would not be a good choice for a meal replacement bar, there just aren’t enough calories to keep you going.
Flavors, taste, and texture
Taste of these bars is purely a natural taste with protein powder. I mean, it’s hard to mess up almonds, honey, and whey protein. Nevertheless, we have to see if they somehow found a way.
The simplicity of this bar can either make you love it or leave you feeling disappointed. Obviously, it doesn’t have any added sugars or flavorings so you might find it to be a little bland. It does, however, have a good natural flavor. It is a protein bar so you will taste the flavor and texture of the whey but you can also taste unadulterated honey and almonds.
This is basically the honey almond flavor with a twist. This is a good choice for those who like a little more pizzazz. With two extra ingredients than the honey almond, vanilla and cinnamon, this is the new favorite flavor of many. Again, it is still pretty simple and you can taste each individual ingredient.
According to the Rise Company, this bar is supposed to taste like a brownie. It doesn’t but it is pretty chocolaty. Another spin on the original honey almond flavor, this has added ground carob chip.
This flavor has been the mildest and fluffiest of the choices. It is probably due to the pea protein and lack of dense almond. It has a nice tangy lemon flavor to it without being overly sour. This flavor has less protein than the others. It is a great choice for a light mid-afternoon snack or two bars can make for a good breakfast.
This flavor is supposedly famous with the kiddos. It is reminiscent of chocolate banana bread only denser. You can definitely taste the banana and chocolate individually but you can still taste the protein flavor but what protein bar successfully masks that flavor? I don’t think it’s possible while maintaining a healthy bar with adequate protein content.
This flavor is probably second to the lemon cashew for its fluffy and light flavor and texture. According to Rise they were inspired by the flavor of a cinnamon roll. It does have some of the aspects but the sunflower butter kind of throws it off. Still very edible.
This is another vegan flavor with less protein than the non-vegan. It has a wonderful tropical coconut flavor. It uses coconut nectar for sweetness and shredded coconut. The chocolate flavor doesn’t override the coconut. It’s a perfect balance.
This bar is the refreshing side of protein. It has the exact same ingredients as the Chocolaty Almond but with peppermint extract added. If the mint chocolate chip is your go-to flavor, you won’t want to miss this one.
Pricing and where to buy Rise protein bars
When it comes to price, these bars are pretty much average. It is about $2 per bar. Even though there aren’t many ingredients in these bars and you’d think they should be cheaper, keep in mind that they have to pay for the certifications of USDA certified organic, Kosher certified, Non-GMO Verified, and certified gluten-free. That is a lot of precautions taken in the selection of ingredients and creation of the product. Their kitchen has to be almost sterile.Check price
Pros and cons
It’s time for the side by side comparison again. Take a look at how Rise protein bars measure up with its ups and downs, goods and bads.
All in all, these bars seem to be very enticing. Who would think twice about stuffing their faces with these bars? If I handed you a bowl of almonds covered in honey and a protein shake on the side, would you turn it down? I don’t think so.
Rise did a good job on fulfilling their motto of simple, healthy, and tasty bars. They are also very conscious of dietary sensitivities, which is a hard task to accomplish. It is in demand, however, and they do a good job of filling that demand.
Their different flavors each have their own list of simple ingredients so people don’t have to guess what they will be eating or have a chemistry degree to understand the ingredients.
The only thing that bugs me is that it seems so simple, how come I can’t make it in my own kitchen? If I really wanted to, I’m sure I could easily recreate some of their recipes. Who has the time, though? It’s a lot easier to pay the $2 and eat it without having to slave away in the kitchen, and by the time I bought all the organic ingredients and all the equipment I need, it would probably end up costing around the same anyway.
The Rise Company definitely seems to have integrity and they prove it by the high quality of ingredients and mixing process. They have won my approval.
